From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Scientists are looking at what role pollution may play in these strandings. Lesson Stuttgart U6 eat the algae, and sea lions and other marine Spielka eat the fish. Why are California sea lions often seen in shows at zoos, marine parks, and circuses?
Wanyee: Yeah, I mean, so. There are about 45, sea lions in BC waters. So there are quite a few of them. And when they die, many of them, they get bloated.
But as you mentioned, the unusual thing is that some of them were missing their heads, so. Jordan: When we say some of them, how often has this been happening?
Do we have any idea, like, how many have been found? Jordan: Have you seen evidence of this? So I have seen pictures. They are quite graphic. But it does look human caused.
Jordan: Well, and what about the video? Is there anybody in the video? And then he spent the next few hours cutting off the head of that sea lion and then paddling back.
Jordan: A few hours? Wanyee: Yeah. Wanyee: I mean, yeah, sea lions, especially, the male ones can get quite, quite big, so I— Jordan: Right.
Wanyee: Yeah, it did take a few hours apparently. So there is some animosity there. And there are sea lions that are killed by humans. But in this case, I think most of the experts that I talk to are kind of— believe that the sea lions were already dead, and then someone comes along and sees it and thinks, this is an opportunity for me to take the head.
Jordan: Okay. So this is my question, an opportunity for what? Who wants these and why? Good question. You know, kind of what happens to the heads?
Why would somebody want to take them? And it turns out that there is quite a demand for sea lion skulls. The commercial sale of a sea lion products is still illegal right now.
So this would be an underground market. Jordan: Why are they worth so much? And who wants them? Wanyee: There are, you know, taxidermy enthusiasts who want to collect as many animals as they can.
And, you know, sea lions are a top predator, and they can get quite big. So I guess to some people having kind of a trophy, so to speak, is worthwhile.
Are sea lions endangered and protected, or, you know, are there lots of them? Like, why is that illegal? Wanyee: Right. So the government is keeping an eye on that population.
But the sea lions have recovered since the s, back when they were hunted. Wanyee: Yeah, exactly. Well, so I guess just a caveat, some first nations are allowed to hunt sea lions for cultural reasons and some ceremonial reasons.
For the most part, the commercial haunts of sea lions is not allowed. There is a group of people, mostly fishers, who believed that sea lions need to be culled and that people can make a living out of selling sea lion products.
These fishers, they believe that sea lions are hurting the fisheries. They say that there are just too many. Jordan: What kind of products do advocates say can be made from sea lions?
Wanyee: Yeah, I mean, so there are some things that First Nations already use sea lions for. You know, the pelt can be used for clothing.
It can also be used for drums. Sea lion whiskers are used in some Indigenous regalia for ceremonies. You could use seal meat or sea lion meat for pet food, or maybe in the future, even humans could consume it.
So yeah, according to advocates, there are lots of possibilities out there. Like, has anybody looked at that to see if the claims are true? There are biologists that have looked at that.
So the effects can be quite complicated to figure out. Sea lions do eat salmon. But they also eat other fish like herring and hake.
And hake actually eat juvenile salmon. So if you take away the sea lines, then for instance, there could be a population boom of hake, which would be bad news for salmon, right?
Jordan: Yeah. Do we know if, besides the lobbying and the campaigning, there is any chance of any of this changing?
Like, are we close to opening up commercial hunting? Is this sitting before anybody or is this just, you know, a bunch of people who work in the fisheries who would like it?
DFO has said that they have no plans to open a commercial hunt. And even if they were starting to consider it, it would still take, you know, one or two years to kind of get through all the paperwork that it would take.
Jordan: Are there investigations going on into why this is happening? So I think what they mean by that is that if someone had shot a sea lion in the head and they took off the head in order to kind of hide the fact that the sea lion died from unnatural causes, then that would be a crime.
Jordan: You mentioned the Black Market earlier. What is the black market for a sea lion head? Where would I sell that if I happened to have one? Otariids, or eared sea lions, raise their young, mate, and rest in more earthly land or ice habitats.
Their abundance and haul-out behavior have a direct effect on their on land breeding activity. Their seasonal abundance trend correlates with their breeding period between the austral summer of January to March.
Their rookeries populate with newborn pups as well as male and female otariids that remain to defend their territories.
At the end of the breeding period males disseminate for food and rest while females remain for nurturing. Other points in the year consist of a mix of ages and genders in the rookeries with haul-out patterns varying monthly.
Steller sea lions, living an average of 15 to 20 years, begin their breeding season when adult males establish territories along the rookeries in early May.
Male sea lions reach sexual maturity from ages 5 to 7 and don't become territorial until around 9 to 13 years of age.
The females arrive in late May bringing in an increase of territorial defense through fighting and boundary displays. After a week births consist most usually of one pup with a perinatal period of 3 to 13 days.
Steller sea lions have exhibited multiple competitive strategies for reproductive success. Sea lion mating is often polygamous as males usually mate with different females to increase fitness and success, leaving some males to not find a mate at all.
Polygamous males rarely provide parental care towards the pup. Strategies used to monopolize females include the resource-defense polygyny, or occupying important female resources.
This involves occupying and defending a territory with resources or features attractive to females during sexually receptive periods.
Some of these factors may include pupping habitat and access to water. Other techniques include potentially limiting access of other males to females.
Otaria flavescens South American sea lion lives along the Chilean coast with a population estimate of , According to the most recent surveys in northern and southern Chile the sealing period of the middle twentieth century that left a significant decline in sea lion population is recovering.
The recovery is associated with less hunting, otariids rapid population growth, legislation on nature reserves, and new food resources.
Haul-out patterns change the abundance of sea lions at particular times of the day, month, and year. Patterns in migration relate to temperature, solar radiation, and prey and water resources.
Studies of South American sea lions and other otariids document maximum population on land during early afternoon, potentially due to haul-out during high air temperatures.
Adult and subadult males do not show clear annual patterns, maximum abundance being found from October to January.
Females and their pups hauled-out during austral winter months of June to September. South American sea lions have been greatly impacted by human exploitation.
Sea lions rely on fish, like pollock, as a food source and have to compete with fishermen for it. Sea lion attacks on humans are rare, but when humans come within approximately 2.
The sea lion appeared to be preparing for a second attack when the girl was rescued. An Australian marine biologist suggested that the sea lion may have viewed the girl "like a rag doll toy" to be played with.
The attack left the man with a punctured bone. She was sitting on a pier side in British Columbia while tourists were illegally feeding the sea lions.
